Son to climb a mountain to fulfil his mum's dying wish

A caring son is carrying out his mum's dying wish '“ to climb Africa's highest mountain on her behalf.

Cancer victim Elaine Hammond booked her place on a charity climb on Mount Kilimanjaro just months before she died.

“She was determined to raise money to help cancer charities even though she was ill herself,” said her son Ashley Meakins.

Sadly, 51-year-old Elaine’s breast cancer had spread to her bones. She lost her fight for life last November
before she could carry out the
mountain trek.

“Her dying wish was that I should climb the mountain on her behalf. It was the very last thing she asked me to do,” said 24-year-old Ashley, who lives in Browns Wood.

He and his best friend
Aaron Roberts have booked to travel to Mount Kilimanjaro in October.

All the cash they raise will be split between Willen
Hospice and the Penny Brohn Cancer Care charity.

Elaine became an avid supporter of cancer charities after she was diagnosed four years ago.

In 2014 she set up the World Walk initiative, which saw sponsored walks take place in MK, Ireland and even as far afield as Australia.
