A pair of stolen tortoises have returned home after a man recognised his new purchase in the Citizen.

John Knibbs and his wife Sylvia were left devastated when their beloved pets were snatched during a break-in at their home in Thane Court, Stantonbury on November 10.

But in a twist in the tale, the tortoises were reunited with their owners last night.

John, 74, said: “We’re absolutely overjoyed to have them back because they were part of the family.

“I would like to stress how thankful I am to the Citizen for their report, which has reunited us with our beloved pets.”

At around 7.30pm last night, a member of the public knocked on the door to tell the Knibbs family he had seen the Citizen’s appeal after buying the two tortoises in Stantonbury sometime earlier.

John added: “A man came to our door with them in a holdall and said he recognised me from my picture in the Citizen. He had come to give me my tortoises back.

“He had bought them from boys in the area, but seen our appeal in the paper.

“So we got them all back in good order and I’m very thankful.

“I hope this encourages people to get in touch with the Citizen if they have any problems, because this just shows how much they can help.”

No arrests have been made and enquiries are continuing.
