Sunshine Children Centre in Furzton is excited to announce that it is the very first Children Centre to be awarded the Milton Keynes Healthy Early Years Award.

The award, available to all early years settings, builds on the successes of the local Healthy Schools programme and supports the links between health, behaviour and attainment.

Created by Milton Keynes Council and NHS Milton Keynes, the award provides a similar structure for services used by children aged 0-5 and their families, and aims to support the development of healthier, happier babies and young children.

To achieve this award Sunshine Children’s Centre provided evidence to show they are:

Implementing a healthy eating policy in their centre - offering regular cookery sessions for parents and children to cook healthy meals together and weaning sessions showing parents how easy it is to prepare fresh purees for their babies

Promoting the benefits of physical activity for all the family - holding a weekly mini strikers session for children and a push’n’tone group for parents; developing a woodland trail and a roadtrack in the sunshine garden to encourage children to play outside.

Promoting healthy lifestyle choices for adults and children* - providing 1:1 support to 16 local families and holding a fortnightly Women Together group to offer support to women with the challenges of parenthood.

To mark this achievement there will be a special celebratory event at the Sunshine Children’s Centre on Wednesday 21st March, 12 – 2pm. During the event there will be a number of children’s activities linked to healthy eating and physical activity, including the opportunity for children to make their own bread with the community dietician.

Anne Train, Centre Coordinator, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to qualify for this award. It is a reflection of the good work we do in the centre, but also an excellent example of how our local families support the centre and take on board the messages we are communicating to them.”

If you would like to attend this event please contact Anne Train, Sunshine Centre Manager on 01908 508566, prior to the event.
