thecentre:mk has won a prestigious Green Apple Award for its waste management work.
The submission from waste management specialists Europa on behalf of thecentre:mk won Gold in the service industries category. The team received the internationally renowned eco award at a special ceremony at the House of Commons on November 11.
The judges heard how 100 per cent of waste at thecentre:mk is reused, recycled or recovered.
New systems brought in by Europa means that both tenants and mall waste is checked for recyclable materials like cardboard, glass and drinks cans. As a result an extra 51 tonnes of recyclable material is now recovered annually.
More waste is now dealt with on site which means fewer lorries on the roads which reduces pollution and congestion around the centre.
The team at thecentre:mk work with tenants and food suppliers to reduce waste by moving away from cardboard packaging to reusable plastic delivery boxes.
Other eco-friendly schemes include reusing old fixtures and fittings within local charity shops. Food waste is kept to a minimum with the centre using a specialist biological system to prevent fat blockages and potential pipe bursts.
Brad Curcillo, operations manager for thecentre:mk said: “To win Gold at the Green Apple Awards is testament to the hard work we’ve undertaken helping the environment. We take the waste management at the centre extremely seriously and the judges clearly recognised that. As a result of our work 100 per cent of our waste is reused, recycled or recovered.”
