Barry St John was browsing in the store for a birthday present for his son last Sunday when he noticed the electric guitar in a prominent position.
Barry said: "As an experienced musician I noticed the guitar and thought it strange that such an expensive model was out on display. So I kept my eye on it just in case.
"All of a sudden this man dashed out of the shop with it so I ran after him."
After losing the thief he asked shoppers if they had seen a man with the guitar.
Barry eventually spotted someone holding the guitar near the Central Milton Keynes library, confronted him and an accomplice and managed to grab the guitar and return it to the shop.
He described the thief and his accomplice to security guards who trawled through the centre s CCTV footage.
In return for Barry s brave efforts, Chappell s manager David Meek has given him a Yamaha electric guitar as a reward.
He said: "We felt that giving the guitar to Barry was the least we could do.
"He really made an effort to retrieve our guitar and we are very grateful."
Barry, who plays in a band called Katch, added: "I couldn t just let them run off with the guitar.
"It annoyed me on a professional level as hard-working musicians such as myself have to save to be able to afford a guitar like that."
l Two people were arrested in connection with stealing a guitar from Chappells on Sunday.
