WHEN the chairman of governors leaves their post at one city school, the tradition of passing the chair is demonstrated in a very literal way.

Youngsters at Portfields School in Newport Pagnell watch the governing body observe the tradition when the chairman steps down after their term of office.

David Tyler received the chair from Newport Pagnell Councillor Simon Baines eight years ago and is now handing the mantel over to Matthew Carter.

The departing Mr Tyler said:“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as chair of the governors and am proud of what we have achieved.”

Receiving the chair, Matthew Carter said: “I’m honoured to be taking over the position in such a high achieving school.”

Headmaster Mary St-Amour said: “The Governing Body continues to be our strength and it is testimony to our success that chairmen stay for at least eight years.”
