Luton Airport: Average security wait times just 10 minutes as airport gears up for a busy summer

Luton Airport is getting ready for a busy summer season – but is confident that operations will continue to run smoothly with security wait times averaging just 10 minutes or less.

The airport welcomed 1.2million passengers in May, with a further 200,000 travelling over this month’s Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend.

But despite the increase in passengers as people once again start to travel, and reports of travel chaos at other airports across the country, security wait times at Luton have remained short, and the airport says that almost 99% of flights operated as scheduled.

Civil Aviation Authority data shows just 0.5% of flights from Luton were cancelled between January and March - the latest figures available.

Alberto Martin, CEO of LLA, said: “The half-term holiday provided further evidence of the continued surge in demand for air travel, and I’m delighted that LLA was able to step up in what has been a difficult period for our industry.

"The hard work and commitment of our frontline teams was key to this success, as it has been all year, and it has been fantastic to receive such positive feedback from our customers.

"LLA has achieved an average wait time for security of less than 10 minutes year to date, and with a busy summer ahead of us, we will be working hard to maintain a high level of operational and customer service excellence.”

More than five million people are expected to use the airport between now and the end of September – flying to 130 destinations across Europe and North Africa.

And new facilities that have opened for passengers include independent craft beer and food specialist, The Big Smoke Taphouse & Kitchen, a new Burger King restaurant, and two eye-catching, self-serve Illy coffee outlets.

There’s also a new WHSmith Bookshop, whilst ChangeGroup has opened additional currency exchange outlets and ATMs.
