One of Milton Keynes’ best kept secrets, The Tree Cathedral, is to be available for green burials.

The Tree Cathedral, at Newlands, is owned and managed by The Parks Trust but Milton Keynes Crematorium will operate the interment and scattering of ashes at the site.

Briony Fox, Head of Community Engagement at The Parks Trust, said: “Over the years many people have asked us if they can scatter ashes or have memorials in our parks and The Tree Cathedral which is a natural, peaceful haven is an ideal place for this.

“We’ll be reinvesting the income from green burials into looking after our parkland and through careful, sensitive management we intend to preserve the unique and special nature of this wonderful space.” The Trust intends the green burials to blend seamlessly with the natural environment of The Tree Cathedral so only spring bulbs and meadow flowers will indicate the burial places.

“No gravestones, markers or other mementos will be allowed on the site, although memorial benches, bird and bat boxes will be available.”

Green burials will be offered at three areas of the Tree Cathedral or the Woodland Walk where ashes can be scattered, the Cathedral Meadow and the Tree Cathedral itself where ashes can be interred in an earthen grave. Prices range from £98 for the Woodland Walk, £251 for the Cathedral Meadow to £700 for interment in the Cathedral itself, and include an entry in an online book of remembrance.

Briony added: “The Tree Cathedral has been used for services, blessings and gatherings and we think it is a very appropriate location for a loved one’s final resting place.

Even though it has been around for years it’s amazing how many people still haven’t visited it so we’d love to give it a sense of purpose and let more people discover just what a special place it is.”
