Twitter trolls fire abuse at the partner of Olympic hero Greg Rutherford

The partner of Olympic medal winner Greg Rutherford has hit back at Twitter trolls who launched a personal attack on her.

Susie Verrill watched Greg on TV from their Woburn home when he jumped to win a bronze on Saturday night.

As fast as congratulations from family and friends poured in, the Twitter abusers leapt into action.

One accused Susie of “ruining” Greg and causing him to let down the country.

Others were full of crude and hateful sexual messages.

But Susie, who has a one-year-old son with Greg, has managed to shrug off the spiteful comments with admirable feminism.

“During the Olympics, I suspected morons would tweet me,” she told The Pool popular online magazine.

“I think men who send me sexual hate are frustrated by the fact a woman – yes, a woman with a vagina – can run rings around them. There’s an odd misconception that you can’t have a brain and be an attractive woman. We’ve seen it with Helen Skelton-Gate over the Olympics. It’s a shame that so many men like this exist.”

But Susie admitted she found social media difficult to deal with when her son was brought into the mix.

“When we’ve been weathering particularly awful backlash, our son Milo, received threats of his own – and it of course doesn’t rest easy with me at all. I’d gladly kill for him,” she told The Pool.

“A few months ago, we were told someone would rip Greg’s head off in front of Milo and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t find that unsettling.”

But generally the couple have worked out their own method of dealing with the trolls.

“We treat most things with humour. Greg’s very ginger and I grew up with NHS glasses and teeth like Stonehenge, so humour has always been how we deal with things,” said Susie.”
