Unemployment plummets in Milton Keynes over the last year

In real terms, that means hundreds of people have come off benefits and found jobs.

This week staff at the city Jobcentre were celebrating the news

“We’re really proud and the team has worked hard to achieve these figures,” said spokesman Fiona Norris.

The 12 per cent drop is among people of all ages claiming out of work benefits - Jobseeker’s or Universal Credit.

The figure for 18 to 24-year-olds is even more impressive, showing a 13 per cent drop in unemployment.

Much of the success is due to Jobcentre initiatives.

These include offering all new claimants free courses on how to apply for jobs, write a CV and how to present themselves at an interview. Staff also liaise with colleges and employers to seize every
opportunity.

Fiona said: “MK has a very buoyant job market. There are plenty of jobs and an amazing number of good quality apprenticeships.”
