Unpaid carers in MK offered discounts from retailers

The city's 23,500 '˜unpaid angels' who are carers for elderly or disabled family members are to receive a reward for their efforts.

Thanks to Carers MK and sympathetic local businesses they can now register for a new Carers Discount Card.

It will give them up to 50 per cent off food, drink, leisure and transport from a range of local retailers.

Carers MK supports the wellbeing of unpaid family carers in Milton Keynes.

They have enlisted well-known brands including Frankie & Benny’s, Virgin Experience and Haven Holidays to show their support by offering discount.

On Saturday between 9am – 5pm the team from Carers MK, along with the Mayor of MK, will be officially launching the discount card at intu shopping centre.

Carers will be able to register and receive their card on the day.

Information on the different businesses involved with the Carers’ Discount Card will also be available.

Stephen Archibald, Chief Executive at Carers MK, said: “We are really excited to be launching our first discount card for carers here in MK. We understand that caring for a family member or friend can often be a struggle financially because they have had to give up work or reduce their working hours to care.”

He added: “I’d like to thank all the local businesses who are supporting the card and we look forward to giving carers the opportunity to save some money by using the card in the future.”

Amy Townsend from Virgin Experience Days, who are giving a 20% discount on day experiences said: “As a company established in Buckinghamshire, we are proud to be supporting carers in Milton Keynes, offering a discount on hundreds of our experience days for a well-deserved treat.’

Anybody living in Milton Keynes who is caring for someone who is ill, frail or has a disability will be entitled to receive the free Discount Card. It is available to unpaid carers of all ages including young carers.

There are over 23,500 unpaid carers in Milton Keynes. Their efforts save the state £440 million every year, say Carers MK.
