Visitors to AirKix indoor skydiving centre in Milton Keynes were witness to a world record setting event yesterday afternoon.
Under the watchful eye of independent witnesses including a representative from the Magic Circle, magician Martin Rees began his attempt to complete the most amount of magic tricks ever performed in a wind tunnel in three minutes.
Cards, a handkerchief and even a biscuit were accessories as Martin, from Hemel Hempstead raised hundreds of pounds for the charity Spread a Smile.
“When I began training for this world record attempt to help raise funds for Spread a Smile. I couldn’t have imagined all the incredible support I would receive from people.
“Going into the wind tunnel was nerve-wrecking, I was so nervous about making sure I remembered everything I needed to do and staying in the correct position to fly properly.
Martin successfully completed eight magic tricks within three minutes. Witness statements and footage of the new world record will now be sent to Guinness for final validation.
“I felt an incredible rush of adrenalin when I realised I had done it. Setting this world record has taken a lot of training and practice but it has been worth every minute. Thank you to all the team at AirKix who have supported me and been a huge help.”
Next up, Martin will attempt to set the record for the most magic tricks performed on a single skydive when he jumps out of a plane at 12,500 feet on 28 July at Hinton Skydive Centre, Brackley.
The kind-hearted magician hopes his daring challenges will raise £5,000 for children’s charity Spread a Smile and so far has raised just under £800.
“Spread a Smile is a charity which is really close to my heart,” Martin said.
“For over a year I’ve been visiting Great Ormond Street, University College Hospital and Royal London Hospital with Spread a Smile to perform magic tricks for the children who are being treated and cared for there. But the real magic is in seeing the children’s reactions and smiles,” he added.
“We’re so pleased to have been able to support Martin in his world record attempts and incredibly proud of what he has achieved today,” said Airkix Milton Keynes manager Andy Godwin.
“Our wind tunnels reach speeds of 160mph so Martin’s challenge was no mean feat. Spread a Smile is such a worthy cause and we wish Martin the best of luck with his next skydive – we’re sure he will raise plenty of smiles with his challenges.”
