ROAD users rejoiced on Wednesday at the opening of a new eight-mile stretch of the A421 Bedford to Milton Keynes.

The stretch of road was officially opened by Nirmal Kotecha, director of major projects at the Highways Agency and Steve Tar, director of Balfour Beatty.

And by 11.45am the first cars tried out the new westbound carriageway which is intended to reduce congestion, improve safety and reduce journey times for road users.

The new stretch is also intended to reduce pollution direct traffic away from residential areas and complete the dual carriageway link between the A1 and the M1 motorway.
