Volunteering opportunities

Below is a selection of volunteering opportunities to whet your appetite.

> Stowe House Preservation Trust is building an exciting new Welcome and Discovery Centre, due to open in 2015. They are creating brand new facilities and a whole range of imaginative new experiences and activities for everyone to enjoy.

This will transform the visitor enjoyment to Stowe House, one of Englands most beautiful and important Neo-classical houses.

They are currently looking at expanding their team of volunteers and there are lots of ways you can get involved:

Become a Visitor Assistant and welcome visitors to this fascinating building as the friendly face of Stowe House

Train up as a Tour Guide and help engage the visitors through the intriguing history of Stowe

Explore the estate and talk to visitors as part of the Welcome Team

Join the Community and Learning Team and help make Stowe accessible for children, young people and the local community

Delve into the history and significance of Stowe and help to explain the fascinating stories to the visitors as a Room Steward

If you have a special skills or interest let them work with you to discover how you can help each other. Go along to their Open Day on Friday, November 21 at Stowe House (via Stowe School entrance).

Drop-in between 2-6pm for a cuppa and a chat with the friendly team of volunteers.

> The Safety Centre are looking for Volunteer Guides.

As a guide you will have fun taking small groups of primary aged children (6 - 12 years) around an interactive centre which looks like a mini film set.

They will train you and provide your travel expenses and it’s a great one for your CV.

> Joss Searchlight - Campaigners/Fundraisers

Joss Searchlight need volunteers to help create better local awareness of their services leading up to the Christmas period. It is heartbreaking to hear that despite their best efforts they sometimes fail to reach desperate people. They need groups of lovely people to drop Christmas envelope details on a door-to-door delivery in the Milton Keynes area. They also need dedicated people to call to collect the donation envelopes and hopefully to engage some conversation with local people about their work. The amount of money collected is not as important as engaging the local community.

As an adult, if you had a cancer diagnosis there are some 16+ support groups in the MK area you could join. For children with cancer and their families, there is just Joss Searchlight. Childhood cancer is not rare, 1:285 children will be affected by cancer, accordingly to Cancer Research statistics there are 6,200 children in the UK living with cancer so proportionally there could be up to 90 families affected by a child’s cancer in the MK area. The volunteers will receive an induction so that they have a greater awareness of childhood cancers and the impact on families.

> Save The Children - Collectors

Do you have 2 hours to spare? Save the Children need people to give 2 hours of their time on the 5th or 6th December, supporting them to raise much needed funds. They work in over 120 countries around the world and in the UK, and are looking for your help to reach more children. Why not go and collect with them in the Bletchley Asda store.

> Carers MK - Volunteer Befrienders/Drivers

If you are a car owner/driver and would like to volunteer then Carers MK would like to hear from you. They need volunteers to transport carers when needed to events, activities, support groups etc. and to stay with the carer to offer support and a listening ear. The volunteer is then required to transport the carer back home safely. You will need to have a good knowledge of the Milton Keynes area and basic computer skills to update the carers records accurately. Volunteers will need to attend relevant and mandatory training, be 18 years +, have the relevant car insurance (class one) and be willing to undergo a DBS. This role is very flexible as events/activities can take place either during the day or in the evenings. Out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed.
