Cathy Straight and Lorraine Buckmaster are members of a Facebook group called Designer Genes, where all the mums gave birth to babies with Downs between 2013 and 2014.

“One of the mums suggested we made a singing and signing video for Downs Syndrome Awareness Day. We decided to take a line each and perform it in our cars, with our children joining in next to us,” said Cathy, whose son Teddy is three.

They chose Christina Perri’s song A Thousand Years and performed it in the style of James Corden’s famous Late Late Show segment.

TV star Corden himself has tweeted about the video, saying: “A quick reminder that this is the most beautiful Carpool Karaoke ever. #wouldntchangeathing.”

“We all recorded our lines separately and one of the dads offered to splice all the recordings together to make a video. We didn’t realise what a professional job he would do - it was amazing!” said Cathy.

The resulting video was released on YouTube last Thursday. Already it has generated more than six million views, with many people - including James Cordon - reporting that it moved them to tears.

Cathy and Lorraine, whose son is called Jaxon, found themselves turning into celebrities and appeared on This Morning with Holly Willoughby and Philip Schofield.

“There were 20 of us mums and 20 children on the show. It was chaos - but wonderful!” said Cathy.

“We never dreamed our video would take off like this. We’re just thrilled that we achieved exactly what we set out to do - to prove that our children are wonderful and amazing, to dispel all the old-fashioned myths about Downs Syndrome and prove there is nothing to fear about it.”

“Our hashtag is ‘wouldn’t change a thing’. And that sums it up perfectly.”
