Woman says elderly motorists are a risk after being hit by a car in Milton Keynes

Eileen Saunders has lived in Furzton for 42 years, and was walking to the bus stop after her weekly exercise class when she was hit by a car.

She said: “I was crossing the street to get to the bus stop and the next thing I knew I was up in the air.

“The car came out of nowhere, I don’t move very fast anymore so I don’t understand how she didn’t see me.”

The woman who was driving the car was shaken up after the incident, however uninjured, Eileen claims she was in her 80s.

“I really don’t think she should be driving, she was older than me and I gave that up a while ago - I just get the bus,” Eileen added.
“A man and his boy helped me after I was hit by the car, they called for an ambulance and stayed with me until it arrived.

“It took almost two hours for the ambulance to get to me and I was so cold, but thankfully I wasn’t on my own.”

The police were not called to the incident that happened on Albert Road, Bletchley last Sunday, October 9.

Eileen’s daughter-in-law, Shona, said: “We have no idea why the police weren’t called and we are quite shocked one of the bystanders didn’t ring them.

“I reported the accident to the police on Monday and they took a statement, Eileen is worried that older drivers are really dangerous.”

Eileen suffered a fractured leg and several bruises, she added: “I feel 108 now, not 79.”

Currently, motorists in the UK are required to renew their license when they turn 70, and every three years after then, confirming to the DVLA that they are still able to drive safely.

Although there is some statistics that show drivers over 80 are at increased risk of causing a car accident, drivers under the age of 20 have more fatal accidents than drivers over 75.
