Women from across the city are lacing up their trainers for the This Girl Can run at South Willen Lake this weekend.

There will be 5k and 10k races and women and girls of all abilities are welcome to join the fun on Sunday, July 5, with funds being raised for Alzheimer’s Society.

Among those running is Amanda Faulkner whose nan Yiayia was diagnosed with dementia three years ago. After a visit a few weeks ago, and seeing her condition deteriorate, Amanda decided to join the run and will be supported by four friends.

Rachael Glanvill’s step-dad was diagnosed at 56. She said: “ I’ve seen his struggle to access services and support. There is very little for younger people and I want to raise money to help.”

Lauren Riley, whose gran died in 2010 after suffering Alzheimer’s, will be tackling the 10k race. She said: “Watching a once strong and determined woman forget not only who she was, but also who we were, was heartbreaking. I hope that by doing this, I can help raise awareness of this awful disease.

A team of seven make up the Over Running Mums, including Lucy Smith, who saw both her grandads suffer, and then in 2013 her own father was diagnosed at 65.
