Young Freddie joins MK RFL

Six-year-old Freddie gamely walked the 5km course with mum Sophia Pearce and her five colleagues from a local law firm – even though the weather was very British and they were all soaked through before the event began.

Pictons Pink Ladies raised more than £550 for the cause so dear to their hearts and claimed the rain didn’t matter as they were swept along by the enthusiasm of the crowd.

Pictons partner Claire Ward believes almost everyone has a connection with someone with cancer. She has two close relatives affected by the disease.

“One is in his mid 70s and was diagnosed last year,” she said. “He was treated successfully but now it looks like it may have returned. He’s going back to hospital and is waiting for results.

“His wife, who will be 80 in August, had cancer in her intestine and had to have two operations. She’s had ongoing treatment since her diagnosis two years ago but fortunately she was recently given the all-clear.”

Claire added that new developments in cancer care and treatment could only happen through charity challenges like Race for Life, which fund vital research.
