Young people leaving care enjoyed a wakeboarding experience at Willen Lake to celebrate National Care Leavers Week.

The event was organised by the council’s Leaving Care Team and WakeMK to give the care leavers a positive experience and try wakeboarding for the first time.

The theme of this year’s National Care Leavers Week 2011, which took place from 26 October to 2 November, was ‘A Day in My Shoes’ and focused on the day to day experiences of young care leavers. The Leaving Care Team has organised a competition entitled “A day in the life of a care leaver” to enable young people to tell their stories.

Gail Tolley, Director of Children’s Services, Milton Keynes Council, said: “Our young people aged 15 to 21 leaving care face many barriers in gaining education, training or employment, usually related to their early childhood experiences and/or disrupted education.

“This opportunity has given the young care leavers a new experience to bolster their confidence improve their belief in themselves and hopefully as a consequence, assist in their overall well being.”
