It sometimes seems as though the only TV show that matters at the moment is Love Island.
And with millions of UK viewers caught up in island romance fever, its popularity is now even spreading to the older generation.
84-year-old Barbara, from Wakefield, can’t get enough of all the Love Island action, as she explains to Claire Schofield.
Why do I watch it?
I watch a lot of reality television programmes, and while I had heard of Love Island before, I’d never bothered to watch it.
But I’d seen it advertised quite a lot and since there was nothing else on, I thought I’d give it a go. Now I’m hooked!
It’s really good fun and I’m fascinated by it all – I just love it.
For me, it’s all about seeing who is with who and which couples will stay together, but I am like the old granny to them all.
When the men are talking, I’ll be saying ‘ooh you shouldn’t be talking to them like that’, or to the women I’ll say ‘now come on, you should let him have his say’, but of course they don’t listen to me.
I watch it every night and in case I miss it I have it on tape. I’ve never missed an episode since the season started and I’ve even started watching the Aftersun programme so I can keep up with the gossip on what’s been happening.
Thoughts on the contestants
Jack and Dani
I really want Jack and Dani to win. I think they are just lovely together and make such a good couple. To me they are the most genuine and I love they they have stuck together since the beginning.
A lot of them will go off with one and then to another, and if one of them leaves they’ll go for someone else – I don’t like that. I think Jack and Dani will definitely last after the show and I wouldn’t be surprised if Josh and Kaz do as well.
She has got better as the series has gone on, but I didn’t really take to her much at the beginning. She seemed as though she was genuine with Eyal, but then she went to another and then she was with someone else.
Now she’s asked Wes to be her boyfriend, she’s grown on me.
He’s very, very shy. He’s one of the old school, I would say, because he acts a bit more like how we would have back in my day.
We were more innocent back then and a lot more reserved, and I think he’s a bit like that.
I keep changing my mind about Laura, because she did a lot of moaning at first! She always seems to be complaining and has stormed off once or twice, for nothing I think, but there you go, some people soon get upset.
On the other hand she has had some of the other contestants doing a few dirty tricks on her, but if she gets annoyed, she gets annoyed, and then she’s quite nasty.
She’s another pain in the bum! She’s forever saying “I’m a loyal person, I’m a loyal person”, but I don’t think she is really.
She’s been coupled with one or two, but she used to get upset and go off in a huff for nothing, and if she was genuine and loyal like she claims she is, then she would have left the island with her partner so they could be together.
The man for me?
If I had to choose a man from this year’s bunch, I’d pick Jack because he’s lovely and so sweet – but he’s probably a bit young for me!
I wouldn’t pick somebody just based on looks. Don’t get me wrong, I’d like somebody nice, but what they’re like as a person is a lot more important.
Would I have gone on the show?
I wouldn’t have gone on the show myself, if I was younger.
It’s all about going out with a chap that you haven’t chosen for yourself and that’s who you’ve got to go out with, but I’d want to know somebody first.
When I was younger, people just went to the Saturday night hop to meet people and that’s where I met my husband.
It was a lot different back in those days; people are a lot more forward now and when I hear how some of them speak to each other, I think gosh, I’d never say anything like that!
People live together now, but we would never have done that when we were younger – we got married. We wouldn’t even go on holiday together before that. It was so different then.
But I do think it is harder for men now, because women today are much more independent and less reliant on men, I suppose.
Thoughts on last night’s episode
Last night was so funny. Jack and Dani had to go to the supermarket to make the meal with only seven euros to spend, and he kept eating all the crisps as they were making it. I couldn’t stop laughing.
It’s so complicated now Laura and Alexandra are both after the same man, and I don’t think Dr Alex knows who he wants.
Sam obviously still likes Georgia and they have been secretly kissing in the bathroom together, but the new Josh likes her too so watch this space!
They all have very complicated lives at the moment and tonight they’ve got to pick partners again, so it could all change.
It’s all very exciting – I can’t wait to see what happens next.
