BritBox: BBC and ITV reveal plans for new streaming service

BBC and ITV are coming together to launch a new streaming partnership named ‘BritBox’.

This streaming service will allow viewers to watch a variety of classic shows, with new programmes also set to be made specially for BritBox, with the first arriving next year.

BritBox comes to Britain

A US version of BritBox launched in America two years ago, attracting more than 400,000 paying subscribers, but an announcement on ITV’s Twitter account this morning confirmed that Britbox is coming to the UK.

Carolyn McCall, the CEO of @ITV said: “BritBox will be the home for the best of British creativity - celebrating the best of the past, the best of today.”

Which shows will be included?

Numerous ITV and BBC programmes are set to move to BritBox after they have been broadcast on TV and fallen off BBC iPlayer and ITV Hub - the broadcasters' own catch-up services .

Alongside recent shows, BritBox will also be the home of a variety of classic British comedies, dramas and documentaries.

Shows including Love Island, Gavin & Stacey, Gentleman Jack and Broadchurch will be on BritBox when it launches this year.

This subscription service will cost £5.99 per month in HD, launching between October and the end of December.

The press release said that "viewers will want to subscribe to BritBox because it is uniquely British", and that there is "growing consumer demand in the UK for streaming services".

However, this new service will face tough competition, with nearly 10 million British homes already subscribing to Netflix, with other streaming services such as Amazon already popular established streaming platforms.
