More than half of Brits admit to being fans of 'property porn'

New research has revealed that we are a nation of property peeping toms, with more than HALF of Brits (52%) admitting to having indulged in ‘property porn’ online within the last year.

The term ‘property porn’ is used to describe a type of television programme, magazine article, online listings which shows off desirable homes, especially houses in beautiful locations or with luxurious interiors and we as a nation love getting our fix often spending hours scrolling through properties every day.

But for many, this often leads to overindulgence with 16% of Brits admitting that they feel they suffer from a ‘Property Porn’ addiction because of the length of time they spend viewing properties.

While more than 14% admit that they are worried some of their friends have an addiction.

Keeping it a secret

A shocking 79% of Brits are unashamed about their property porn habits but more than a third (37%) of Brits also admit to keeping their property peeping secret from their partner to avoid difficult conversations.

And almost a third (29%) say it is now a hobby for them, with 33% blaming the pandemic for the increase in time spent searching for property porn.

The research commissioned by property letting agency Mashroom has revealed that millions of Brits blame the presenters of Location, Location, Location for their property porn addiction with nearly a third (28%) of Brits polled, blaming Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer for being responsible for the nation’s property porn habits.

A sizzling hot ad campaign from Mashroom launched today, and is set to get viewers hot under the collar. With a nod to the infamous M&S food campaign, the saucy 60-second ad, a seductive voice guides property-porn viewers through a fantasy home scenario.

For most, the bedroom is where the magic happens with 28% of those polled admitting to searching for properties whilst in bed. Shockingly, 2% of Brits have admitted to scanning for properties online during sex while some even scroll away when on the loo!

While half of those polled (50%) say they indulge in property porn in the evening.

Other than that Brits were found to be most often searching for properties whilst their partner/housemates watched TV (19%) and in the office with 18% of Brits admitting to property admiring whilst they should be working.

On average Brits have two property viewing apps on their phone at all times, With 66 percent of Brits admitting that they often spend time on apps such as Rightmove and Zoopla just for fun.

A further 65 percent of the consumers of property porn admitting to doing so with no intention of buying any of the properties they view.

Key features of the perfect home

The research conducted by Onepoll has also revealed the key features which would make the perfect property for Brits. For many their perfect property would have to be in the perfect location, (49 percent) have an amazing view from the bedroom window (47%), and an en-suite bathroom in the master bedroom (44 percent).

However, millions of Brits feel that searching for the perfect home has become a national obsession with more than 42% of Brits agreeing that the nation spends too much time searching for the perfect home and nearly half (47%) looks at properties in far away locations.

And where do daydreaming Brits want to move? A third (33%) say their dream home is by the coast.

Stepan Dobrovolskiy, CEO of Mashroom, said: “There doesn’t have to be a time and a place anymore for checking out desirable homes. Long gone are the days of having to stand at estate agent windows or looking at the property sections of newspapers and magazines. Tenants can scan homes at the touch of button at a time which suits them and who are we to judge when and where that perfect time is! As well as being good for landlords and tenants it’s also good for anyone who dreams of moving anywhere in the world. Property is a rapidly changing market and searching for homes is a form of escapism and entertainment as well these days.”
