Chris and Gabby Adcock began their Olympic badminton mixed doubles campaign with a defeat to the Chinese pair Xu Chen and Ma Jin.
Competing in the ‘group of death’, which also features a team from Poland and from Denmark, the Adcocks got off to a fantastic start against the Chinese world number two pair, winning the first game 21-13.
But after a closely-fought second game, the Chinese drew level with a 22-20 win.
And they carried the momentum into the decider, capitalising on the tiring Adcocks to win 21-15 and secure the first win in Group B.
Next up for the Adcocks is the Danish team of Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Christinna Pedersen on Friday (1.35pm).
Their final Group B match will be played against the Polish pair of Nadieżda Zięba and Robert Mateusiak on Saturday at 1.45pm.
