The Thai racer, who lives in Milton Keynes, led the standings heading to Hockenheim, and finished fourth ahead of title rival Charles Leclerc in Race 1 to extend his lead.

But in Race 2 on Sunday, he was caught up in a first lap crash which eliminated a number of drivers at the hairpin.

Albon, suffering damage in the accident, limped back to the pits but was unable to continue.

Leclerc capitalised on Albon’s retirement, finishing on the podium in third place, and with it, re-taking the championship lead.

The series now takes a break until the end of August before the Belgian GP.
