Chub is nearly a record

A worm trotted under a waggler on a 16 to 3lb line is all it took to tempt a mega chub which came within an ounce of re-writing local records!

And turning the scales at 8-1 – just one ounce short of MKAA’s Adams Mill record banked five years back – it is the second-largest chub reported from the Upper Ouse in modern times.

Captor Mark Jones, pictured, couldn’t believe his luck as he netted the fish, and said: “It was a real blink-and-rub-your eyes moment, and I did that three times because I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.”

But the fish (beating his PB by more than 2lb) was for real, and came from a Stony-Wolverton area MKAA section he has fished for years. “It was an incredible fish, and a real honour to catch.”

Maver MK have finally come alive in the Castle Ashby AT winter league – winning Sunday’s fourth round with Richard Lattimer leading the way on a match-topping 48-2.

Top on the day by a clear eight points, they’re now fourth overall with just two points spanning the top four sides and two rounds to go.

Newport and friends are set on upgrading their Big Pit’s carp potential, and this week saw a stocking of fish to double figures.

And MK Vets’ pairs do at Alders saw another win for ‘Latts’ as, teamed with Paul Swain, he helped the duo win with 138-11 followed by Phil Bardell and Mick Reynolds on 105-1 as Gary Underwood and Dave Ridgeway shared 93lb.

Tempus fugit: seems only yesterday that Messrs Bardell and Underwood were up-and-coming youngsters...yet both now qualify to be out with the vets, and ‘new recruit’ Bardell posted on facebook: “What a splendid group of oldish lads...a pleasure to be out with.”

Osprey’s Help the Heroes gig saw 22 anglers raise some £450 – with Ian Sunderland winning the match at Alders with 52-10 as Adam Griffiths netted 44-1, Ray Makin 42-7.

Nene-Towcester, Long Pound cut, Stoke Bruerne: Paul Minney 18-10 (two 4lb chub plus skimmers), Dave Gibbins 16-12 (skimmers) and Les Goodridge 9-12.

Newport-MKAA, Sherington Bridge Ouse and back of the Abbeys: Bob Gale 14-5, Mick Stanley 13-13, Steve Wright 13-12.

Linford, fur & feather, Brickyard canal: Tom Hefferon 4-8, Steve Funnell 3-12, Pete Whatley 2-8.

Calvert, Itter’s Pit: Derek Bishop 4-2, Charlie Green 2-4, Dave Lewis 0-15.
