THE David Lloyd Redway Runners have been shortlisted for this year’s BBC East Sports Awards in the Community Club of the Year category.

The Milton Keynes-based running club was also nominated as Club of the Year in the Bucks & MK Sports awards.

Martin Lawrence, chair of David Lloyd Redway Runners, said: “We’re surprised and delighted to be nominated.

“The running club is less than two years old and to receive a nomination is a really good acknowledgement of our fantastically friendly club, and how we try to encourage runners of all abilities.

“It also recognises the work that our committee and our volunteers do. It’s a fabulous boost for all our members.

“We know that not everyone feels confident enough to join a running club and that’s why we’ve based the Redway Runners around fun, sociable runs. Our members are runners of all abilities.”

David Lloyd Redway Runners have run four Beginners Running Courses in 2012, with the hope of encouraging non-runners to get active, and so far more than 100 people have attended the course.

In running terms, the club have enjoyed good success this year. They recently took the team award at the Dirt Half Challenge, as well as men’s and ladies’ team prizes at the Squeaky Bone Trail Relay Race.

There has also been individual success for Stephen Patey who won the Movember 10k in Campbell Park – a day after being part of the winning team at the Dirt Half Challenge – and Keith Miller who won the Rudnage Rugged 10K.

The BBC East Sports Awards ceremony takes place at the University of Bedford on Tuesday, December 4. Top sporting stars and unsung heroes will also be honoured for their achievements. For more about the club see
