MILTON Keynes players made up the majority of the South Midlands squad for their recent National Inter-Area Youth Korfball Championships at the University of East Anglia in Norwich.

The U11 side performed very well in the morning pools, but lost to eventual champions Kent 6-2. In fact they were the only side all day to score against Kent who were coached by the England U21 coach.

An undefeated afternoon session saw the team finish in 5th place. The squad of 14 included children from Summerfield, Oxley Park, St Thomas Acquinas, Cold Harbour and Newton Longville Schools and were captained by Larissa Mellor of local club MKX.

Several more MKX players from city schools competed for the U14 team that included Twins Jo and Tom Foster for the first time. They adapted quickly and after a tricky morning where shots didn’t seem to sink despite having more chances than opponents, the afternoon saw a change of fortunes with wins over Cambridgeshire and Norfolk to see them finish 6th.

The U16s faced a very stiff test against several strong teams, including London and Kent who included a few National League players. And although the team didn’t manage a win, they did pick up two draws against Middlesex thanks to some excellent shooting from Kieran Brown and Emma Lawson in particular.
