THE only Milton Keynes team to start their league season on Saturday were the Ladies 3rds who suffered a 3-0 defeat to Gerrards Cross.
The city side started brightly with good possession in the opening 10 minutes, but crucially they were unable to convert any of their chances into a goal, and typically Gerrards Cross managed to score against the run of play.
And they soon doubled their lead, with a shot finding its way in off the post. MK kept going though and Sophie Wombwell was unlucky not to score after a good team move involving Talyssa Mensah, Trish O’Rourke, Susan Watkins and Lauren Hooton.
MK worked hard in the second half, keeping possession, picking up players and continuing to support each other. Claudia-May Davidson hassled the Gerrards Cross defence with the other forwards, but despite being awarded some short corners, MK could not get the goal their play deserved.
Player of the match Barbara Grove produced a great performance as sweeper, passing the ball up the pitch to clear the danger. And Sue Pardy, Emma Hooton, Alice Bailey and Maddy Boyce kept closing down the attacks and frustrating the Gerrards Cross forwards who started arguing amongst themselves.
However, it was not enough and MK conceded a third goal when the ball crept through Holly Captainino’s pads – completing a frustration day for the team, but one they can learn from.
