MATT Fretwell has made an excellent start to the season, leading one championship and sitting second in another as he fights for honours on two fronts.
The 14-year-old is currently competing in both the Shenington and Whilton Mill Championships where each track holds races once a month until December, with the drivers’ best nine results counting towards the overall championship.
Matt has been raising since he was just eight years old and showed his racing credentials at an early stage when he set the lap record on Daytona’s north circuit, which he held for some time.
At the January final at Shenington, he was forced to swerve to avoid a spinning competitor, and unfortunately crashed into the tyres, damaging his steering. That translated to a low place finish but it didn’t dent his confidence for long.
In the February round Matt managed to claw back some vital points to rise to 6th place overall, and last weekend he again raced at Shenington where he finished a respectable third place.
It was a very close finish too, with just 0.28 seconds separating the first three drivers. The result leaves Matt in second place in the overall championship, and he also won the second place trophy for the ‘Winter Series.’
Matt enjoyed more success around the Whilton Mill circuit though and currently sits top of the pile after two races. And after showing top form at the Daventry circuit, he is very much looking forward to the next round of the championship as he looks to increase his lead at the top of the table.
