MK KNIGHTS secured top spot in speedway’s Midlands Development League with a comfortable win against Sheffield Tiger Cubs at Rye House on Saturday night, with a Grand Final against either Belle Vue Colts or Mercia Vikings to decide the Championship to come.

On a very busy weekend for junior and amateur racing, Sheffield struggled to find four riders for the meeting, and to ensure that it went ahead, drafted in Mercia Vikings’ Martin Knuckey, Sean Phillips, and Rye House youngsters Brad Tokley and Joe Exley.

Knights were forced into a late change, with Ross Walter replacing Conor Dwyer who had sent his engine away in preparation for his appearance in the British U19 Championship at Sheffield on Thursday. And Niall Strudwick replaced Shaun Tedham who was riding for his ‘parent team’ Stoke Spitfires.

Heat one saw three of the four riders hit the dirt on the first turn, with all four back in for the re-run which saw Walter lead Knuckey from the tapes with Sheppard claiming third for an opening 4-2 success for the home side

Consecutive 5-1 wins in heats two and three saw Knights open up 10 point lead before Joe Exley split Greenwood and Sheppard in heat four to restrict MK to a 4-2

Heats five and six saw the Knights pairings of Walter and Sheppard, and Greenwood and Strudwick record maximum heat advantages to secure a 28-8 win which keeps Knights top of the pile, three points clear of Belle Vue with both teams having one meeting left.

Next up for Knights in the MDL is a tie against Mercia Vikings at the Brandon Stadium in Coventry next Wednesday.
