THE 2012 Midland Development League title will be decided in a two-legged Grand Final between MK Knights and Belle Vue Colts after the city side secured an 18-18 draw against Mercia Vikings in their last regular meeting of the season.
Already confirmed as finishing top of the table, Knights went into their final league match of the season at Brandon Stadium with a hand in deciding who their opponents in the title decider might be.
Anything less than a win for Mercia Vikings would see Belle Vue Colts confirmed as runners-up, guaranteeing their place in the Grand Final against the Milton Keynes team.
Knights were forced into two changes with Ollie Greenwood and club captain Conor Dwyer both unavailable – the latter starting a long recovery from a badly broken right arm that he sustained in the British U19 Championship the week before – so their places were taken by potential new signings for 2013, Jack Kingston, and Ryan Terry-Daley.
Unfortunately for Kingston, his match – and season – came to a thunderous end during the first race as he couldn’t avoid a collision with Vikings’ Dan Greenwood, who slid of in front, with Jack clipping Dan’s bike and cartwheeling into the safety fence, suffering a broken collarbone.
The remaining three Knights riders stepped in to cover for Kingston’s absence and, with Shaun Tedham on inspirational form, held out for an 18-18 draw, ending the Vikings’ Grand Final dream.
The MDL Grand Final between the Knights and Belle Vue Colts will be staged over two-legs. Dates and venues to be confirmed. See www.mkknightsspeedway.co.uk for more details.
