The East Anglian Summer Regional series kicked off in Braintree at the weekend, with Milton Keynes riders taking on 180 others from across the country.

The sun finally showed its face for the opening round of action, and the track team even had to water the track just to keep the dust down for the riders.

Milton Keynes BMX Club took 28 riders to Essex, and Shaun Barrass was the first on the podium in the 24 inch wheeled cruiser class. Showing his skill and power, he outsmarted the other riders by making a sweeping pass on turn three to jump four positions and claim 2nd place in the 45 and over age category.

The 30 and over ladies class saw a win for the day’s programme cover star, Tracy Clark, from Braintree, as Sarah Fuller from MK fought hard and only narrowly missed out on beating her – not bad considering she recently broke her collarbone.

It was then on to the main 20 inch events, with the 11-12 years group combined to keep things super competitive. And the A final was set to be a showdown between MK’s Toby Lachlan and Braintree’s Joseph Carter. From the gate it was a fight going, but Toby soon pulled ahead of the other racers and held his position for the win,

Not to be outdone by his little brother, Austin Lachlan raced superbly all day to reach the A final in the 14-year age group. The final race was super competitive and saw lots of elbows going into turn one, with Austin pushed back into third place. And holding his own for the remainder of the race, he held to take a place on the podium.

In the championship women’s class, Peterborough’s Bethany Campbell showed great strength to fight off the challenge from MK’s Izzy Ferrada in the final as Lana Redgewell gave chase in third.

The master’s class was wide open with at least half the field capable of winning. But it was MK’s Nick Hill who blasted his way to the front, showing some smooth riding and jumping skills as he barely made contact with the ground before crossing the line first.

After round one of the series, MK sit fourth in the club standings. The next round is in Norwich on May 6.
