OLYMPIC champion Greg Rutherford has pulled out of the Diamond League Final in Belgium due to injury.

The Milton Keynes long jumper has competed just once since winning gold in the Olympic Stadium a month ago, coming third in the Diamond League meeting in Birmingham at the end of August.

There, he jumped 7.88m to finish behind Aleksandr Menkov of Russia and American Christian Taylor.

Rutherford sat out for a couple of jumps that night because of a slight groin strain, and it appears that injury has forced him out of the event in Belgium.

Taking to Twitter, he said: “Due to the groin injury I picked up in Birmingham I’ve had to pull out of Brussels Diamond League Final.

“I’m gutted but sadly my body wasn’t having it. I will be doing everything I can to be ready for next weekend in Newcastle though.”
