At the inaugural session in the Azerbaijan capital Baku, Verstappen’s Tilbrook-built RB12 was spotted smoking early in the 90 minute, prompting the team to withdraw him to discover an oil leak around the gearbox.

The team would have more work to do with 20 minutes to go when Ricciardo became the first person to crash at the new street circuit, tearing the right rear wheel from the car as he swiped the barrier at Turn 15.

Ricciardo finished the session 13th fastest, while Verstappen’s hindered session saw him finish down in 16th. World champion Lewis Hamilton topped the timing sheets ahead of his Mercedes team-mate and championship leader Nico Rosberg.

The second session starts at 2pm UK time.
