Lampard’s time with New York City came to an end after two seasons in the Big Apple, while Gerrard too called time on his time state-side when LA Galaxy’s season ended in play-off disappointment.

While neither have managerial experience, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who was recent sacked from QPR though is not thought to be in the frame to replace Karl Robinson, whose six year spell at the club ended three-and-a-half weeks ago.

And early favourite Paul Mitchell is now expected to be out of the running with his gardening leave at Tottenham Hotspur proving to be a considerable stumbling block in bringing the former Dons midfielder back to Stadium MK.

Former Bristol City boss Steve Cotterill is still in the running though, while Richie Barker isn’t expected to take up the job on a full-time basis.
