Brittain could be used as a forward more often

Callum Brittain can play anywhere on the football pitch, according to Russell Martin after deploying him up front against Rotherham last Saturday.

Brittain has been traditionally thought of as a defender during his career, but has also had stints in midfield too before he was put on the right of a three-man attack at the New York Stadium. Taking on the then-league leaders, Brittain saw precious little of the ball, but impressed his manager enough to warrant a second opportunity down the line.

Martin said: "He can play anywhere – we've played him in midfield as well. He's a brilliant footballer, one of the best we've got. Good footballers can play in almost any position. We didn't get the ball to him enough last week, which was frustrating for him as well.

"His best position is right back, but as and when we need him up there, we know he can do it and do it well.

"I got banded about everywhere during my career, and we could say the same about George Williams. It's more about work-rate and application. There are positions he wouldn't enjoy – he might be alright in goal! We're lucky to have him. He's in a real battle with Regan Poole for right back but it's good to have that flexibility with him."
