Carruthers needs to mature to be the best Dons have

Oft maligned for his childish outbursts when he loses the ball or doesn't win the free kick he feels he deserves, Carruthers' talent is unquestionable. His temperament on the other hand does lead to inconsistency and despair for his manager Karl Robinson, both on and off the field.

The 23-year-old has had to wait patiently of late, coming off the bench in the last four to make an impact on the pitch while Ed Upson, Darren Potter and Ben Reeves have operated in the centre of the park.

But while his fragility often costs him a place in the line-up, Robinson feels Carruthers has all the ability to be one of the best players at the club but needs to work on the mental side of the game if he is to become the players he wants to be in the long term.

"He's probably one of the most talented players we have, but there are greater facets to have than just talent," said Robinson.

"We talk about Darren Potter doing the easy things right all the time, but it's harder to do that than doing the wonderful thing right once a game.

"Samir's maturity has to start coming out. If he can channel his game-understanding and his maturity and can run them parallel with his talent, he'll be one of our best players. We have to work on him behind the scenes, but he's so, so talented."
