The day Dons did the double - 12 years on

MK Dons have celebrated three promotions during their 16-year history, but only one league title, and that came on April 26 2008.

A week earlier on the road at Edgeley Park, Dons' 3-2 win over Stockport County secured promotion to League One so winning the game at Valley Parade would ensure the League Two crown ahead of rivals Peterborough, who trailed by four points heading into the penultimate weekend.

After just 13 minutes, Dons took the lead through the unlikely source of Jude Stirling. The right-back only scored one other goal that season, and it turned out to be the winner in a 2-1 win over Mansfield. Five minutes later, Dons had doubled their advantage through Lloyd Dyer in what would prove to be his last start for the club before leaving for Leicester City.

Despite having Joe Colbeck sent off, Omar Daley pulled one back for Bradford just before half time, and despite Peterborough's routine 4-1 win over Grimsby, Dons saw out the game to claim the crown and with it, the double with the Johnstone's Paint Trophy win in March.

Dean Lewington, who played 53 games that season, said: "We were on a good run heading to Wembley anyway, but people were worried it may have been a distraction from the league. But I don't think we lost another game in the run-in. It gave us a lot of momentum heading into the next season too.

"Until that season, we were at the Hockey Stadium, we were scrapping about at the bottom of the league, weren't winning many games. But that season, we had a big name in Paul Ince, we were winning games and we gave the fans, and people in Milton Keynes, something to celebrate."
