Kasumu made his debut last year in the EFL Cup against Newport County, but had to wait more than a year for his next appearance, when he started at right back against Stevenage in the Checkatrade Trophy on Tuesday night. The 17-year-old didn't let the opportunity pass him by either, putting in a man of the match performance at right back as he took over the spot from fellow academy product Callum Brittain, who is away on international duty with England U20s.

Making his first appearance under Robbie Neilson, Kasumu impressed his manager.

"David did great," Neilson said. "He's a great kid who has come through the academy, he can play at right back, right wing and central midfield.

"He wants to do well, has worked really hard and has the right quality. But he's still a kid, his fitness needs to get better but that will come.

"The Checkatrade Trophy is great for giving people game time. It's another game we have to deal with but it's an opportunity for these kids to play.

"It was an experience for the younger lads who didn't get on, like Dylan Asonganyi and Jay Bird, just being around the first team set up."
