Thursday morning's draw saw Dons avoid a potential trip to AFC Wimbledon, drawn instead against the League 2 outfit in the week commencing December 5.

Dons qualified for the second round having seen off Barnet and Peterborough, but lost out to Norwich U21s 4-1 earlier this week in a game that mattered little other than a chance for a home draw in the second round.

Dons' caretaker boss Richie Barker named 15 academy products in his side at Carrow Road on Tuesday night, and believes the much-maligned tournament offered not only a great opportunity for young players to gain first team experience, but also a viable way of getting a day out at Wembley.

"I'm sure if you research back, there will be some players who have carved great careers having made their debut in this tournament," he said. "We have had a reputation of that in recent times, and I wanted to continue that the other day.

"It is one of the major trophies the club has won in the short history. At the end of the day, a trophy is a trophy and a trip to Wembley is a trip to Wembley.

"My brother captained Southend there a few years ago, and to watch that was great for me, let alone him.

"It's a great opportunity, but it's not something we should lose sight of in terms of blooding young players."
