Dons have to turn draws into wins

After one of his side's best performances of the season, Russell Martin said he was disappointed not to come away with all three points against Peterborough.

Despite controlling the early proceedings, Dons found themselves trailing to Jonson Clarke-Harris' fourth goal in two games on 25 minutes. And they had to wait until late in the day for Cameron Jerome to equalise 12 minutes from the end to get the minimum they deserved from the game at Stadium MK.

Unlike the 'game of two halves' performance in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Burton Albion, Dons were the better side throughout against Peterborough so a draw left a sour taste in Martins' mouth afterwards.

He said: "It was an outstanding performance. I'm frustrated and disappointed for the players because we deserved to win. To dominate a team at the top end of the league, with the quality they have, is really pleasing.

"It's just that last little bit of composure and quality when you really need it. We were so desperate to go and score, so we need to work on that. But I'm really pleased.

"We were well on-top. We were hoping for a goal a bit earlier, but the whole second half was in their half, that's why I'm disappointed – we completely dominated.

"Once again though, whenever there's an issue like there was at Burton on Saturday, we get questioned, but we responded brilliantly. In the end we've not got what we deserved - we've got a point but it should be all three."

The result moved Dons up two places to 15th in the standings, but they are level on points with Plymouth - Saturday's opponents - who sit 19th. With seven draws to their name in 18 games, Martin says his side have to start turning the draws into wins if they are to get away from the bottom end of the table.

He said: "We draw too many games, we have to turn them into wins. We're getting harder to beat. The season would have a different feel if we turned into wins. That's the next step. There will be a tipping point, I'm convinced of it. We have to stay consistent and don't get carried away.

"It's really tight. I don't look at it too much, but I don't obsess about it. I'm sure it will reassure some people, but I don't think we'll finish anywhere near where we were at the start of the night. With performances like that, we will climb the table. If we can put together back-to-back wins, it will look so different.

"We all want to be higher, we all feel we should be higher, but we're in a good place because we know what we need to work on, what we need to bring in in January and we've got clarity. We will need everyone at some point, and if we keep improving the league position will do the same."
