Dons off the mark as Swindon take top spot

League tables mean little after just one game, but MK Dons sit tidily in the middle of the table after their 1-1 draw with Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.

Baily Cargill's 88th minute goal cancelled out Madger Gomes' strike nine minutes into the second half to earn Russell Martin's side a point as League One football returned after six months.

League Two champions Swindon Town took to life in the third tier with ease as they beat Rochdale 3-1 to take top spot on the opening day, with Accrington Stanley in second after their shock 2-0 win over Peterborough.

Charlton, relegated from the Championship last season, beat Crewe 2-0 and sit third behind Accrington on alphabetical order followed by Hull, who beat Gillingham 2-0, and Lincoln who saw off Oxford by the same scoreline.

Fleetwood Town started their season with a 2-1 win over Burton, while Plymouth's first game back in League One also ended with a win, beating Blackpool 1-0.

There were four goals in the first 31 minutes at the PTS Academy Stadium as Northampton Town drew 2-2 with AFC Wimbledon. Like Dons, Sunderland left it late to secure their first point of the season, needing an 82nd minute equaliser to cancel out Bristol Rovers' third minute penalty for their 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light. Portsmouth and Shrewsbury played out a 0-0 draw at Fratton Park.

Wigan Athletic and Ipswich Town kick off their seasons at Portman Road on Sunday.
