Dons '˜right to suspend Carruthers' says Robbo

Carruthers made national headlines when he was pictured urinating into a pint glass at the racecourse on Tuesday as part of a club trip to the Festival.

On Wednesday, the 22-year-old was fined two weeks’ wages and suspended by the club, meaning he’ll miss Saturday’s game with Brighton & Hove Albion at stadium:mk.

The decision to suspend Carruthers leaves Robinson’s midfield dangerously low on numbers for the visit of the team sitting second in the Championship, prompting some fans to question whether or not it is the right decision.

Robinson feels the club had to set an example in light of Carruthers’ actions.

“There’s complete disappointment in what he’s done. Taking MK Dons away from it, as a professional footballer, it’s conduct you cannot accept. Urinating in a pint glass at any time, not just in view of the public, is unacceptable.

“We were very impressed by how he admitted his wrong-doings. He didn’t make excuses or point the finger, he took it on the chin.

“The punishment from the club is right. For a footballer, the most important thing is to play football. So to suspend him for a game as important as Saturday wasn’t a decision we took lightly.

“We go into the game with only one central midfielder now, but we had to do what was right. People have deemed the punishment as harsh but others see it as fair.

“The club handled the situation impecibly, and Samir took the punishment like a man.

“But he cannot do what he did, and he was told in no uncertain terms.”

And Robinson feels Carruthers will learn from the suspension and negative time in the spotlight and come back stronger.

He added: “It’ll affect him at the weekend when he’s not playing. It’s part and parcel of being a footballer. Controversially, he could learn valuable lessons from this.

“I said to some of the players who were there: it could have been any of them.

It was an uncomfortable place for him to be, and I saw the disappointment and sadness in his eyes.

“If he tried to make an excuse or do anything other than accept it, you could point fingers. But he has been punished.”
