It was their first piece of silverware back in 2008, and Luke Williams says Dons are setting their sights on the EFL Trophy again this season.

Carlton Morris fired in Dons' opener before Jay Bird bagged a brace in an entertaining game at the Lamex Stadium as Dons were 3-2 winners as they are on the edge of progressing into the next round. It was also Dons' first away win since September 2019.

Having picked up wins in both of their opening games, Dons' assistant manager Luke Williams said Russell Martin is aiming to take on the competition this season.

He said: "We want to try and win every game. It's a really good tournament. We want to win it, first of all and we want everyone to be involved.

"The boys have shown they can come from behind to level, because we've done it in every game, but today to go in front, we suffered a big blow to lose that, but we stuck to our task and got the job done.

"Stevenage worked unbelievably hard and put pressure on us non-stop for 95 minutes. They put balls into challenging areas, but they were playing properly to win."

Dons' win over Northampton on September 8 was their last win too, and heading into a big game in League One at Portsmouth on Saturday, Williams added: "Let's hope the guys are starting to feel a bit more gelled together. We've seen a good pattern of dominating games and chances compared to the opposition.

"We've not been clinical enough in either box but let's hope this is the start of that."
