Dons' short-term contract extensions will be at players' discretion

Football clubs have been given dispensation to extend contracts with their players beyond their June expiry dates, Dons' Exectutive Director Andrew Cullen has confirmed.

With nearly half the squad outof-contract at the end of June, and any potential return of football likely to see teams playing in July, the EFL has made moves to allow players and clubs to extend their current contracts until the end of July to finish the season - should it ever restart again.

The same applies to loan signings, with clubs able to approach those they have loaned players from to extend deals beyond their expiry dates. Dons currently have three players on loan - Carlton Morris and Louis Thompson from Norwich and Andrew Fisher from Blackburn.

Any contract extentions though will ultimately come down to a decision from the players, and whether or not they wish to continue at MK Dons, Mr Cullen admitted.

He said: "At the moment, half of the squad's contracts would expire at the end of June, but as it stands, the season will run into July. But the league has agreed to allow clubs to offer extended contracts until the end of June, and allowed us to speak to parent clubs of loan players and carry those deals on.

"But that depends on whether the players want to do that, and that's another concern. Whichever way you look at it, there will be complications."
