Dons '˜stuck to their guns' in Rangers win

Leading through Dean Lewington’s 50th minute strike, Josh Murphy won but missed a penalty in the 86th minute, leaving the home side to count down the minutes without a comfortable cushion.

But another penalty, this time won by Rob Hall, allowed Ben Reeves to rattle home Dons’ second of the day in stoppage time to keep them three points outside the relegation zone.

“I thought the way we conducted ourselves after that penalty was excellent,” he said. “We could have fallen off the wagon, but we stuck to our guns.

“We’ve won the game, that’s the most important thing. Hopefully we can build on this now, because we’ve got a massive game at The Valley on Tuesday.

“We were excellent. We just didn’t want to be out of the game in the first half. We’ve had good halves recently, but we had to be disciplined. We were sensational in the second half.”

Replacing injured Joe Walsh, Antony Kay, an ever-present at the back last season, returned to the starting line-up, as did David Martin in goal.

Kay took some criticism for his own goal at Leeds back in January and lost his place to Walsh at the heart of the defence.

And after a promising show at the back, helping Dons to a clean sheet, Robinson heaped praise on the defender, but admitted he might not be at the club next season.

Robinson said: “He got a bit of criticism for scoring the own goal at Leeds, but Antony Kay has been an incredible servant to this football club. I’ve got a lot of respect for him. He gives this club everything.

“Sometimes you make mistakes, but he wears that shirt with pride and he puts everything on the line. He leaves nothing to chance.

“Will he be here next season? We’ll have to see in the summer, but he’s been an unbelievable servant to this club. He played a massive part in keeping a clean sheet.”

Alex Revell, despite not scoring, put in a man of the match performance leading the front line. And even though the fans are clamouring for him to start every game, his manager insists he will continue to rotate the former Rotherham man with Nicky Maynard.

He added: “Revs showed you why we brought him in, but we’ll keep rotating him and Nicky Maynard. They’ve got a great relationship. We’ve got two great Championship strikers now.”
