Aneke returned to action against Fleetwood, having missed effectively all of Dan Micciche's spell in charge barring 14 minutes away at Oldham.

While Alex Gilbey is expected to be sidelined until later this year, Peter Pawlett and Osman Sow could return to face Bristol Rovers at Stadium MK next Saturday. And Aneke says Dons, who sit five points from safety in 22nd in League 1, will need all the players they can get to help them out of trouble.

"We need all the boys we can get," he said. "A few weeks ago, we had a lot of injuries and suspensions. We'll need everyone pushing for one cause.

"I'm delighted to be back - I haven't played for five games, and I was itching to get out there and help. I forgot I started against Oldham! I believe I can score and assist. I don't want to be watching.

"There's definitely still belief. I wasn't there but we played well against Rochdale, and today we created a lot of chances. I'm back now, and there is definitely belief. But when we go 1-0 up, we need to go 2-0 up and kill games off.

"I could have scored, I could have got a few more assists too and that's fine but as a team we need to adjust. When we're a goal up, we had chances. Just before they scored, we had a great chance. Of course, they're going to get chances but we need to make sure we take ours. We didn't do that, and obviously we drew 1-1."

Aneke formed a good understanding with Chelsea striker Ike Ugbo, and the latter should have wrapped up the game at Fleetwood early in the second period but squandered his chance when put through by Aneke.

He said: "I think Ike makes good runs, he has ability - you can tell he's from one of the top clubs in the country. I played him through, and I hope next time it goes in. That would have killed the game off. We're disappointed it didn't go in but that's football."
