The Clarets dished out Dons’ heaviest league defeat since February 2010 as they gave a masterclass in attacking play to leave stadium:mk 5-0 winners.

Joey Barton scored Burnley’s only goal of the first half, pouncing on a dawdling Darren Potter to calmly put the visitors ahead after 15 minutes but Dons were still in it at the interval.

The hopes were dashed just 32 seconds after the restart though when Sam Vokes skipped past Antony Kay and Kyle McFadzean to make it 2-0. After that, the wheels came off.

Andre Gray made it 3-0 on 64 minutes when he was left unmarked to head past David Martin, and Matthew Lowton made it 4-0 shortly afterwards.

Antony Kay was sent off for bringing down George Boyd with 15 minutes to go, and the former Peterborough man made it a five-star performance as he smashed home a fifth in the 82nd minute.

“I don’t think anyone saw that coming in the first half,” said Robinson.

“The second goal really killed us. Once the third one went in, the players looked punch drunk. I don’t think we lacked effort, but we lost our way.”

But despite being dealt his worst league defeat as Dons boss, Robinson wants to use the result as a way airing his grievances before swiftly moving on to Reading on Saturday.

He said: “We’re all going home disappointed but we cant dwell on it.

“We’re really hurt, but we want it to. We need to let it hurt and we need to keep the aggression in until Saturday.

“It allows me to dig a few players out internally, and they have to stand up and be counted. I can be as ruthless and honest with the players as possible because the performance allows me to do so.

“I don’t think I’ve ever had a beating like that in the league before, but I’ve never played Burnley who have been relegated from the Premier League here before. We’re a million miles from these teams, and we’re competed with them. But their goals knocked the wind out our sails.”
