Neilson oversaw Dons' 0-0 draw with Charlton in the FA Cup from the stands on Saturday, having been unveiled as the new manager barely 24 hours earlier.

While Richie Barker took control of the side for the final time at The Valley, Neilson took both the pre-match and half-time talks, and was happy with what he saw, according to Potter.

"He came in, gave us some encouraging words, he was happy with the first half, and likewise in the second. But there's certainly things to improve on going forward and I'm sure we'll do that. I'm looking forward to it.

"He told us what he wanted to see from us - working hard, getting amongst people and getting in their faces. He hasn't had too much time yet and hasn't been on the training ground to implement his ideas but obviously he will do moving on. It's an exciting time, and we'll see what they bring to the table."

Dons certainly had chances to book their spot in the third round. Ben Reeves and Kieran Agard both came close to opening the scoring, and Dean Bowditch had one cleared off the line in stoppage time as the tie forced a replay back at Stadium MK.

"I think so on the course of the 90 minutes," Potter added. "We probably didn't create enough given the amount of possession we had in the first half, but overall we were the better side and deserved more from the game."
