"Most of our memorable nights have been in this competition rather than the FA Cup."

Whether it is a game against Manchester United or European champions Liverpool, the League Cup has provided MK Dons with some special moments down the years.

Dons return to competitive action against Coventry City in the Carabao Cup tomorrow (Saturday) in their first competitive game in nearly six months but the lure of a big game in the next round is not something lost on captain Dean Lewington.

Russell Martin is having to field a threadbare side as a result of losing five defenders to injury and international duy, and as yet has not signed a replacement for top-scorer Rhys Healey. But despite the challenges ahead of them ahead of their game against the Championship Sky Blues, Lewington says Dons are approaching the game with victory in mind.

He said: "We'd like to win it... the game! We'd like to start on a positive and do our best ot win the game and take it from there. It's all eyes on the game and do our best.

"Most of our memorable nights have been in this competition rather than the FA Cup. If you can get through them, there's always a chance of getting one of the big boys. Even if they play their younger teams this year, it's still the prestige of having teams come here and that's something we'd like to achieve."

Dons played League One champions Coventry three times last season - drawing twice in the league and Dons winning 2-0 at Stadium MK in the EFL Trophy - and also in pre-season, which saw Mark Robins' side run out 3-2 winners.

"They were very good last season, a very strong team," Lewington continued. "They play a similar style to us, and it will be a good learning curve to play a team that managed to get out of the league last season. In pre-season they were strong, they've added a few players and spent a bit of money so they've got a bit of extra quality, but it will be a good game."
